Chapter Sixty - The Easy Kill
White-blue orbs quickly turned into dark ones as Chris returned to the scene where he had lost he previous athemé. Sobs were the only thing in evidence in the dark alley, startling Chris as he came out of his orbs. He looked around and a look of mischievous delight filled his face as he walked slowly up to the person crying on the ground over the body of the woman he had killed. Like her, he had dark hair, but his skin was darker than her pale almost white skin.
This was going to be so easy, but it was a good way to start off his promise to her that he would destroy those she cared for. This man was so distressed by her death that he had to be someone she cared for.
It was a pity he didn't have her powers so that he could see what he was up against, but he didn't think that would matter, because he'd soon have those powers for himself. Careful to not make any noise, he slowly began to form a fireball in his hand. Likely that would be more than enough to take care of him.
Once he was close enough to be confident in his aim he lifted his hand above his head and flung the fireball forward. The fireball had almost reached it's goal when it suddenly arched away from the man on the ground and crashed into the end of the alley.
The grieving dark haired man jumped to his feet and looked at Chris with wide eyes. As he looked at Chris, his eyes narrowed and something wild and angry replaced the confusion of seeing Chris standing there.
With a snarl, Chris threw a half formed fireball at the first man and turned to look at who had altered the course of his fireball. Two more dark haired men ran toward him, anger in their eyes. One of them hissed at him and a snake like tongue slipped between his lips. His eyes changed and within seconds a snake was slithering toward him at high speeds.
A snake demon. That was interesting. If he remembered correctly, snake demons were vulnerable to ...
He didn't get to finish the thought before the giant snake lashed out and wrapped himself around Chris, electricity coursing through him as he wrapped tighter and tighter around Chris. This guy was no ordinary snake demon.
Desperate to escape before the snake demon killed him, Chris focused all his attention on orbing out. He reappeared in dark orbs behind the third man and immediately pulled out daggers from behind his back, stabbing them into the back of the other man before he could make a move.
"Ben!"
The action momentarily stunned the other two men, but only the grieving man screamed the name, presumably the name of the man Chris had just stabbed. The snake demon was so stunned that he lost his snake form and turned back into a man.
Seeing an opportunity, Chris took the opportunity to send two daggers at the snake demon, immediately followed by the power stealing athemé. He definitely wanted the powers of this unusual snake demon.
Like the fireball earlier, the daggers went off course. Furious, Chris spun around and saw Ben looking at him with a weak grin. Then, his eyes rolled back in his head and he apparently lost consciousness. Or died. Chris wasn't very particular. He'd deal with him later.
There were still two of them to handle. He could leave, but he didn't want to. He had a demon to kill.
He saw the two of them huddled against the wall, conferring in whispers too low for him to hear. That would not do.
The first man, the one who had been grieving got to his feet, and started toward Chris. He appeared to be chewing something as he did, which gave Chris cause for pause. There was something very odd about that and he still didn't know what this man was. He could be another demon. He certainly associated with them, but something told Chris there was more to it than that.
His attention was pulled away from him as the snake demon shimmered out. He couldn't lose track of him or there was going to be a problem.
The dark haired man coming toward him proved to be the more immediate thread as dark orbs surrounded his hands and a darklighter bow showed up in his hands.
Chris felt his eyes widen as he realized that this guy had to be some sort of darklighter, but clearly not a normal one, because darklighters didn't care about people. They didn't care when someone like the woman dead in the alley died. This was a most peculiar group, Chris thought as he orbed out in dark orbs.
Still not ready to leave, he reappeared near the woman's body. He glared down at her for a moment, which he could have her powers so that he would know what he was dealing with. So far he knew he was dealing with a snake demon who wasn't a normal snake demon and a darklighter who genuinely seemed to feel a loss. And then there was the woman herself, a darklighter demon who could see auras and thought his hands were bad ones for her power. What did that make the third man, the one with the telekinetic powers?
There really wasn't time to think about that, because a darklighter and his electricity filled snake demon friend were out to get him. Sure it was his fault, but he needed powers if he was going to take on his family and he was definitely going to do that.
The darklighter spun around to look at him. Seeing him near the dead woman seemed to infuriate them. "Get away from her!"
Chris was surprised since the battle had been mostly quiet, but this guy had been grieving pretty hard when he'd arrived. She had to be pretty important to him. "And if I say no?"
The darklighter snarled and leaned forward as if to run at Chris. Surely he knew that this was a perfectly ridiculous way to try and take Chris on.
"Toby, no!" The snake demon exclaimed as he grabbed the darklighter by his collar. "Aka's dead. We need to get CT out of here before he's dead, too."
CT? Hadn't they called him Ben earlier?
Toby stared at Chris for what seemed like a long time, but couldn't have really been that long. Chris saw the moment he decided to go along with his friend and realized that this was his last chance, at least for now, to get the snake demon. He didn't care about the darklighter. It would probably be dangerous for him to mix darklighter powers with his blood, but he wanted that snake demon.
Toby took a step back, his attention focused on Chris. The snake demon dropped his hold on Toby and also took steps back. They could teleport themselves away, but apparently Ben, CT, whatever his name was, he was still alive and they couldn't just leave him.
Chris focused his attention on where he had left the daggers drop after the first failed attempt on the snake demon. He moved over some so that he was properly aligned with the daggers. This time he used his powers to pull the two daggers and the athemé toward him, with the snake demon right in the middle. The two daggers hit him on either side, this time actually hitting him before he noticed them and the athemé hit him in just the right spot to pierce his heart.
Not wanting to press his luck, Chris orbed the athemé back into his hand, followed almost immediately by the daggers as he secured them each on his body. He had what he wanted and it was time to get out of here. As Toby dropped to the side of his fallen friend, Chris disappeared in dark orbs.
