I'm not sure if you know, but I played four characters on the TV show "Charmed." I wanted to show you some rare, never seen before images that were taken with the set Poloroid camera that is used for continuity.
I started on “Charmed” with the character "Janor", a Grimlock. That's the image on the left. I Guest Starred on the show and I’m guessing I did a pretty good job because on my last day of shooting they asked me if I wanted to do another role.
That role turned out to be the recurring character called Belthazor. The image at the bottom, from right to left, is me, Julian McMahon, and my stunt double, Tim Sitarz. I'm a pretty good fighter, but being ratcheted out of a window or doing a high-fall is not my thing. I let the professional stunt guys like Tim do that for me. And he's great. I got him to double me on a lot of the movies I did.
And then I also played Shax, the image on the right. For fun, and between shots, they put Holly Marie Combs up on my left shoulder, and her stunt double on the right.
And the other character I played was “The Source" but only for one episode.
People asked me how I did those characters so differently. Well, for me, it starts with their physicality; how they move. Then that will inform how they speak; the sound and rhythm of their words.
For instance, for Shax, the script said he appears like a tornado. So, I made his movements flowing, almost like a Martial Arts move. And then I imagined with that movement, he might sound like a twisted version of Jim Morrison from the band, "The Doors."
I did 14 episodes on “Charmed” and had a great time. Whenever I showed up to the set as Belthazor, Alyssa Milano would always give me a kiss on the cheek and say, “You’re not scary.” Holly was really nice too, really down to earth.
And I know the rumors about Shannen Doherty, but for me, she was always nice and very professional. I would always see her doing extra work off the set with the stunt people just to make sure her fight scenes looked good. I remember one time when we were preparing for a scene, she got a box of roses from someone. When she opened them, they were dead roses. People can be so cruel.
My character Shax killed Shannon off the show and then she was replaced by Rose McGowan. I remember one day when I was Shax, Rose walks up to me and asks me if her outfit made her looked fat. I thought that was pretty funny, that she’s asking that question to the guy that’s trying to kill her.
And Julian was really great to work with. He and I had a great relationship and we worked closely to make sure there was a synergy between his character, Cole, and mine.
I also got to work with Brian Krause and Dorian Gregory and they were good guys as well.
Overall, it was a great experience working on that show. I gained a lot of loyal fans from around the world. I’m so blessed.
