Chapter Two - Cole Asks a Favor
Across town, Cole was in his apartment with a rather uncommon guest. He stood with his back to the Avatar, unconcerned of any danger, certain there was none. “My problems are none of your concern.” He turned around to look at the Avatar. “All that should matter to you is that I’m willing to join your kind, become an Avatar.”
“I understand,” the Avatar told him, hands folded over his chest, a slight smile on his face, “and we’re pleased to hear it.” His face darkened as he continued, “Still I cannot but wonder why now, after all this time?”
“You have unlimited powers, don’t you?” Cole asked, cutting to the heart of the matter, at least the heart of it for him.
“We have the power to elevate powers such as yours, to raise them above the restraints of good and evil,” the Avatar told him, choosing his words with care.
“Which makes them unlimited, yes?” Cole pushed.
“Yes,” the Avatar admitted.
“Then that’s why for now,” Cole informed him before striding forward, talking as he did. “Which means, I assume, that I can use these powers to manipulate, say, time?” He stopped next to the Avatar and gave him a searching look. “Reality even?”
“Understand, Cole, these powers are not meant to be used for personal vendettas,” the Avatar reminded him, sounded not the tiniest concerned, but then he never did. “They’re meant to be used with other like us. To shape a future we control.”
Cole brushed that aside. “Oh, I understand very well indeed.” His voice was dark as he added, “And believe me, I’m all for it. But I need to take care of something first and to do that I need unlimited powers.”
The Avatar looked away. “I’m afraid that can’t be allowed.”
“Then, I’m afraid I can’t join you,” Cole told him, causing the Avatar to look at him. “Who are you kidding?” Cole scoffed at him as he walked away. “You need me. Otherwise you never would’ve come to me in the first place.”
There was a slight hint of worry in the Avatar’s eyes as Cole continued to speak, looking out the window. “Just one favor, that’s all I ask. Then, I’m yours.”
