Prologue - Paige's Plan
The attic appeared empty until orbs formed in the center of the room into Leo Wyatt. Looking around in a questioning voice he said, “Paige?” Raising his hands up in a sort of shrug he sounded slightly frustrated as he added, “Come on, Paige. I know you’re here. You summoned me." The sound of rushing air or something similar caught his attention and he swung his head to face toward it. “Paige?” In front of him all he could see was a branch that appeared to be tapping on one of the stained glass windows at the front of the attic. “Paige?” he repeated as behind him someone with distorted vision and distorted hearing came closer to him.
And then she jumped right into him. Leo squirmed and wiggled in pain before he exploded into a million orbs of white light. Now, finally Paige Matthews came into view, celebrating. “Ha! That is a vanquish!”
His orbs recollected to him, Leo orbed back into the attic, annoyed. “Damn it, Paige.” He walked toward her, annoyance and some anger written all over his face. “I would appreciate if you didn’t practice on me. I may be dead, but it still hurts!” The last words esculated almost to a shout.
Paige didn’t seem bothered or even to notice his annoyance much. “I am sorry, Leo, but I think I came up with a perfect way to vanquish Cole.” Walking over to a table where the Book of Shadows lay, she continued talking. “I kept thinking . . . what is it that makes him so indestructible?” Reaching the table she stopped. “And then I thought, it’s his protection shield.” She picked up a small potion and examined it. “So I came up with a potion that makes me invisible long enough so I can get past it, say a spell and blow him up from the inside.” As she spoke she threw her hands out in excited example.
Leo stood there, hands crossed in front of his chest. “Firstly, congratulations, cool potion.”
Paige dipped into a curtsy. “Thank you.”
“Secondly, it will never work.” When Paige’s smile fell into a deep frown, he amended himself. “Okay, even if it does, it’s not something you should be going at alone. Whatever the ultimate solution is it lies within the Power of Three.”
“Yeah, well, we’ve tried that,” Paige argued. “Besides, I’m a witch too and I don’t see why I can’t try to operate on my own every once in a while.”
“You can and you have,” Leo reminded her, “but Cole is different and you know it.”
“No, I don’t know that, Leo,” Paige informed him, a little annoyed herself. “Now, I have worked really hard on this by myself for days, I know I can do this.” She shook the bottle in front of him. “And I wanna do it. For Phoebe.” With that she stormed out of the attic leaving Leo a little bewildered and not sure of his next move.
Across town the elevator doors opened revealing Cole Turner playing uncomfortably with his tie. He looked miserable, sad as he walked over to the a small end table under a wall mirror and tossed his wallet and keys on it. He picked up a photo of him and Phoebe from the table and sighed. Looking in the mirror he said, in a voice tinged with emotion, “Happy Birthday.”
He walked away into the living room, not really noticing anything other than the photo in his hands. Behind him, Paige appeared out of the shadows from the balcony, invisible except for a slight distortion. He put the photo down on a different table next to the couch, just before Paige jumped into his body. Like Leo he squirmed and wiggled, trying to scratch out the pain before exploding into a million dark lights.
Paige became visible again, breathing heavily at first before a smile slowly crept onto her face. “I did it.” Then the sound of buzzing and the black lights collecting together into a mass caused the smile to drop from her face altogether. “Oops.”
Not quite fully formed, the black lights shoved into Paige, knocking her through the closed doors to the balcony and over the edge as she formed into orbs. Cole fully reformed on the balcony between the now broken doors, angry, screaming out his frustration.
Unable to control herself, Paige’s orbs continued to fly all the way across the city and right into the water of the bay. Once she hit the water she reformed into herself and resurfaced, all wet. As she treaded water, she covered her face and sneezed.
